Winona Literary Club Met
WINONA LAKE– The Winona Literary Club met on Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. at the Robin Hood Community Center in Winona Lake. There were 19 members present and one guest.
Stan Ide was the featured speaker for the program, bringing over 30 years of beekeeping experience and a lifetime of varied work and ministry. A graduate of Purdue University who later earned a Master of Divinity from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, Ide spent many years in campus ministry before retiring and devoting his time to teaching a Bible study, beekeeping, and gardening. His fascination with honeybees began in childhood while observing his grandfather’s hives and grew into a large-scale hobby that once included managing as many as 60 colonies. Today, although scaled down, he continues to care for seven hives, sells locally made honey, mentors others in the craft, and even uses proceeds from his honey to help provide Bibles to South Korea.
Ide opened with Scripture references to honey and invited attendees to recall familiar biblical connections. He then guided the audience through the world of bees, explaining how honey flavor varies with pollen sources, describing the hive's structure and outlining the roles of the queen, drones and worker bees. Particularly intriguing was his explanation of the bees’ “dance,” a form of communication used to direct other bees to food sources.
Afterward, there was a short business meeting with the reading of the minutes from the previous club meeting, followed by the treasurer's report. Refreshments served by the hostesses were a selection of chocolate cake and gluten-free strawberry shortcake, along with Chex Mix and its gluten-free counterpart. Tables were arranged with purple placemats and dark green napkins, accented by Easter bunny centerpieces, fresh daffodils and plastic eggs.
The next meeting will take place April 15 at 1:30 p.m. at the Robin Hood Community Center in Winona Lake. The program will feature a book review and a special musical performance by Ann Rego and Jordan Fredericks, with piano accompaniment by Dr. Judie Meulink. Rego is a local voice and piano instructor. Fredericks, a Warsaw native, is a trained vocalist and composer who teaches voice and piano and works with students throughout the community. Meulink, a longtime leader in community music and artistic director of Vocal Vision Youth Choirs, will provide accompaniment. To reserve a spot with the club, either as a guest or as a member, RSVP to Marcia by calling 574-527-7687 and leaving a message by April 11.
Women throughout the community are invited to become part of the Winona Literary Club, a 122-year-old organization dedicated to learning, culture and friendship. Meeting six times in the fall and six times in the spring, the club offers programs featuring local speakers, book reviews and musical performances by area musicians. The gatherings provide an opportunity to hear stories, learn about the community and share time with others who value cultural enrichment. Each meeting concludes with a short business session followed by refreshments and friendly conversation in a welcoming atmosphere.
