CLAYPOOL – Even with the upcoming maturation of a $34,000 CD, the town will still be far short for needed road repairs, Claypool Town Council heard Monday. Water Superintendent Gene Warner estimated that repairs to Main and other streets would cost about $72,000, based on similar work done in 2010. He and council members listed several sidewalks and roads that could use paving and other work, including sections of Clay and Calhoun. The local roads and streets budget has only $17,000, Clerk-Treasurer Connie Morgan said, while the town will have a $34,688 CD mature May 23. “$34,000 sure doesn’t cover $72,000,” remarked Council President Niki Miller. Councilman Don Miller expressed a little more optimism: “No, but it makes a dent.” Main Street was his main concern, and he suggested the town develop a plan to repair streets little by little as money allows. “Main Street is so alligatored, if we don’t do something we could lose the whole thing,” he said. “Maybe this is a case where we could do the driving surface this year, then find grants for sidewalks, curbs and gutters next year.” Council also set a date for a public hearing for the water rate increase ordinance, during its April 15 regular meeting. The increase may include a late penalty of 25 percent for water and 10 percent for wastewater. And council set spring cleanup for May 10. Crews will pick up larger curbside items after their regular trash route. Several items are excluded from pick-up, including tires, hazardous and household chemicals, computers and televisions, and appliances with freon or compressor still in them.
