Claypool to Revive Town Festival

Posted
CLAYPOOL – Come September, Claypool may have its first town festival in seven years.

Town council members gave their support Monday to a proposal from resident Donna Morris to bring back a town festival. The Sept. 8 Claypool Fun Day would be a three-hour event geared toward kids, with a parade, games and contests.

The festival might have music, she added, but food vendors would be limited to snow cones and cotton candy – she doesn’t want it to compete with town restaurants.

“The idea is to utilize what we have,” Morris said.

She said the Fun Day also would be a celebration of the reopening of Claypool Elementary School, which was renovated and reopened in 2010, and the Ind. 15 overpass, which is scheduled for completion in September.

Claypool previously had a festival from 1993 to 2005, though Morris also recalled Scout Day held in the 1970s, with activities such as a pet parade. She said she’d like to do a different activity every year.

Council members said they liked the idea, and Clerk-Treasurer Miccah Shepherd noted she was eyeing September for some kind of event. The festival committee will work with the new town park board, and the event is sponsored by the Claypool Lions Club.

Council members also approved allowing golf carts on town streets. Drivers must have a license and proof of insurance, and pay a $20 yearly fee.

Golf carts will not be allowed on sidewalks or anywhere full-sized vehicles aren’t allowed.
