Claypool Resident Initiates 'Good Neighbor Fund'

Posted

CLAYPOOL - Paul Berkey has decided to take the concept of being a good neighbor beyond keeping his lawn mowed, home in repair and music low after 10 p.m.

Backed by members of the Claypool United Methodist Church, Lions Club and the town council, Berkey is raising money for a Good Neighbor Fund.

The money will purchase materials for landscaping, roof, porch and gutter repair and general maintenance at three properties this fall.

Berkey's fund-raising goal is $3,000; the account has $1,000 now.

"It's our first year," he said, "and we're in the process of getting a tax identification number."

Applications for the free services were mailed in August and three property owners returned them.

"There's a lot of people in need," he said of the small return, "but a lot of pride, too. People are just not sure of what we're doing."

Individuals involved in the project are Stu Watkins, Sterling Watkins, Don and Donna Morris, Jason Gross, Deb Elliott and Dennis Crews.

Homeowners will be involved in repair work, too.

"We're a group of concerned neighbors helping each other," Berkey said.

His highest hopes are to replace all the sidewalks throughout town.

The town council has agreed to the use of the town backhoe and labor on the projects, including busting up and clearing away old chunks of sidewalk.

"The town doesn't have any money budgeted for projects in 2004," Berkey said. "They plan to provide some funding in following years."

Most of the projects are geared toward outdoor work; however, one home will receive duct work and electrical repair.

Berkey said cost of materials for any single project should not exceed $250.

The first event is Oct. 4 and following Saturdays in October.

Donations may be sent to the Good Neighbor Fund, P.O. Box 103, Claypool, IN 46510, in care of Paul Berkey. For more information, call Berkey, 566-2933.
