Claypool Man Creates Flag out of Indiana Plates

An award-winning American flag constructed of 156 vintage Indiana license plates, “Hoosier Country” won “Best of Show” honors at the 2012 Kosciusko County Fair.

It is on display at the fair, near the entrance, through Saturday.

Artist Paul Berkey, who created the piece, said the artistic interpretation of an American flag combines automotive history and patriotism of state and country.

The blue “star field” consists of 35 circa-1960 Indiana plates representing various county codes from A to Z. White stripes include many 1967 plates with consecutive county.

Red stripes contain vintage and novelty plates from 1933 on.

“Hoosier Country is constructed of recycled materials,” said Berkey. “It has old clothes hangers, repurposed dog-run cables, and flea market nuts and bolts. It’s designed to flow with the wind. It can be hung on an outside wall or from a support as displayed at the fair.”

Berkey is from Claypool and a 1993 graduate from Indiana's John Herron School of Art.

He has listed the flag called “Hoosier Country” on Ebay as a means of redirecting his financial future.

Berkey hopes to inspire Indiana politicians, classic car collectors, auto businesses or famous race car drivers.

Interested observers and bidders can find his listing by entering the keywords “Hoosier Country Flag” into Ebay’s search bar.
