Claypool Council Hears Update On Community Crossings Information

Posted

CLAYPOOL - Claypool Town Council heard a brief update on Community Crossings Matching Grant information during a meeting Tuesday, Feb. 17.
Chris Harrison, business development manager at Commonwealth Engineers Inc., said he met with Clerk-Treasurer Pat Warner earlier in the day to prepare some information that the Local Technical Assistance Program needed for the CCMG process. Harrison also told council the next round for CCMG funding starts July 27, and asked if there was interest in pursuing that.
Council President Ben Stage Jr. said the council would need to get together and look over the street plan they received from the Michiana Area Council of Governments to determine what roads they'd like to address next.
Council Member Don Miller asked Harrison if there was "wiggle room" on the road's ratings, stating the study was completed a few years ago.
"If we deem something's gotten worse since and we'd like to address it instead, is that a possibility?" asked Miller.
Harrison noted most of the town's roads were determined to be in poor condition, with ratings based on the pavement condition and not traffic volumes.
"It's really the finding on can we do a mill and pave, or do we want to look into a larger project?" said Harrison. "I know Graceland Avenue, you all looked at widening that road, and improving those areas, which is going to require some more engineering fees. And if that's the case, we want to get you a budgetary number for that engineering fee up front instead of waiting until the last moment."
In other business, council reminded residents that the ordinances regarding the placement of garbage cans and house numbers go into effect the week of Feb. 23. A meeting to discuss the town's five-year strategic plan will also take place at 6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 19 at the Claypool Lions Club building. Free dinner will be provided to residents, who are encouraged to attend and participate in the process.
Council also:
• Approved its annual fire protection agreement with the Claypool Fire Department.
• Approved the town's annual financial report.
• Approved Town Marshal Trevor Long taking a police vehicle to Beech Grove for funeral services for Officer Brian Elliott, who was killed in the line of duty.
• Council's next meeting is at 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 17 at the Claypool Lions Club building.
