Warsaw Community High School biology teacher Peggy Ciula has been named the Warsaw Community Schools Teacher of the Year.

She was chosen by the selection committee from 14 teachers nominated for the award.

Ciula received her undergraduate degree from Ball State University and her graduate degree from Southern Illinois University. She began her teaching career as a biology teacher at North Newton School Corp., Morocco. She has been a teacher at WCHS since 1987.

"She has the respect of her department and other professional people," said Mike Bott, WCHS science department chairman.

"Her 'students first' approach finds Peggy always available to work with individual students on independent research projects at all times, even on Saturdays," said WCHS principal Paul Crousore.

"The most important lesson that I learned in her class was not about biology, but about myself," said graduating senior Julie White. "I learned that no dream or goal is unreachable, untouchable or unthinkable. Mrs. Ciula has my thanks and respect."

Ciula will represent WCS for Indiana Teacher of the Year honors. The winner will be announced in September.
