City To Upgrade Power Availability At Central Park

Posted

With a minimum of fuss, and $14,000, on-site electrical power can be more readily available for Central Park events.

Warsaw Parks and Recreation Board members heard Tuesday that NIPSCO transformers could be added to the grounds on a permanent basis.

The information, provided by Paula Bowman, City of Lakes Festival chairman, and Paul Johnson of NIPSCO, included several schematics for two 200-amp service transformers and one 400-amp service transformer.

"This is a fix for this event," said park superintendent Jon Garber. "And not only for this event but those in the future."

On the other hand, rental of three diesel-fuel generators costs $6,100, with fuel costs given as $745 (500 gallons at $1.49 per gallon) for the event.

The $14,000 installation price could be offset by NIPSCO grants, Johnson said. However, any cost reduction garnered through a grant would be recouped through billing.

When asked about the electrical needs of food and craft vendors, Bowman said about 10 food vendors participate in the festival with 75 crafters expected.

She said most use electricity, some excessively more than others.

Vendor amperages will be limited this year, according to activity director Andy McCleary.

Board member Bill Baldwin advised the other members to jump on the opportunity.

Johnson explained the transformer and wiring could be installed with a minimum of disturbance to the grounds.

The board would be advised about a grant amount soon, Johnson said, and it would take about three weeks for the equipment to be installed.

McCleary outlined the events planned for the City of Lakes Festival, set for June 22-24.

The First Presbyterian Church will sponsor a concert featuring the Avalon band at 6 p.m. in Central Park Friday.

On Saturday a three-on-three basketball tournament, Big Wheel race and cub mobile race are planned as well as a parade from Boggs Industrial Park to Central Park, followed by the Classic Rock Concert featuring Herman's Hermits.

There will be a kiddie area, food and craft vendors and tours of the Maish and Biblical gardens on Saturday and Sunday.

On Sunday a state cheerleading contest, 5K run and volleyball tournament will be held.

The Warsaw Community Development Corp. is the sponsoring agency for the festival.

Larry Plummer Jr., director, said installation of new lights and benches in Pike Lake Park are being installed.

He said the Lucerne Park ampitheater has been rebuilt, too, with recycled "Trex" material, guaranteed to last 10 years.

Park board members are Toby Sumpter, Bob Richmond, Bill Baldwin and Cathy Folk. John Sadler and Jeff Grose were absent.
