City Tax Rate Lower For 2001

The 2001 tax rate for Warsaw is down 6 cents from last year.

Although the city budget is higher for next year, the tax rate has gone from $2.78 to $2.72. The 2000 budget was $11.2 million opposed to the 2001 budget which is $12.5 million.

Clerk-treasurer Elaine Call said the city council saw no reason to cut the budget any further at the Nov. 1 budget meeting because of the low tax rate.

The city council already had cut out of the budget what they thought was necessary before that meeting.

Mayor Ernie Wiggins said the reason for the lower tax rate is because the net assessed valuation for the city is higher. The net assessed valuation includes the value of buildings, equipment and homes within the city. When there's a growth in the value of real estate and personal property, it allows a lower tax to raise more tax revenue, he said.

Net assessed valuation for the city of Warsaw, according to Wiggins, went from $201 million last year to $213 million this year.
