City Receives Grant For Wood Chipper

Posted

The Warsaw Board of Public Works and Safety accepted an agreement with the Indiana Department of Environmental Management Thursday.

The agreement funds Warsaw Street Department's wood waste chipping program.

"It's for a wood chipper," Warsaw Clerk Treasurer Elaine Call said.

Street Superintendent Lacy Francis and the street department will receive $11,080, according to the agreement.

The grant awarded is from the State Solid Waste Management Fund and is valid for one year.

• A real estate sales agreement with NIPSCO also was accepted by board members.

The agreement appoints Warsaw as the purchaser for property at 2191 E. Ft. Wayne St., for $517,500.

The closing date is July 1.

"I'm comfortable with that," Warsaw Mayor Ernie Wiggins said.

Board member Paul Siebenmorgen also said he was comfortable with the agreement.

The building, which was formerly the NIPSCO headquarters in Warsaw, is intended as the new city building.

Call said NIPSCO is keeping a portion of the ground, and city planner Jeff Noffsinger said NIPSCO owns a substation on the northeast side.

"There's about 10 acres of land out there," Noffsinger said, "and NIPSCO is keeping one acre."

• Board members accepted changes made to an agreement approved Friday with the Animal Welfare League.

The Animal Welfare League has agreed to accept and provide temporary care and/or disposition of animals that may be found in Warsaw. In return, Warsaw will pay the Animal Welfare League $10,000 per year.

Wiggins said the payment will be made in 12 monthly installments and was effective Jan. 1 for one year.

Wiggins said there was a problem with the language of the contract. The Animal Welfare League does not accept "wild" animals.

"We just need to reapprove this (contract)," Wiggins said. "That's the only thing that's changed."

The Warsaw Board of Public Works and Safety includes: Mayor Ernie Wiggins, Paul Siebenmorgen and Jerry Patterson.
