City OKs Zimmer Tax Abatement Request

A tax abatement that will allow Zimmer Inc. to expand its facilities was approved during Monday night's city council meeting.

Zimmer Inc. requested the council grant a 10-year tax abatement on property at 1535 W. Center St. and 1777 W. Center St.

Zimmer will construct an additional 120,000 square feet on to the existing manufacturing facility located at 1535 W. Center St.An additional 100,000 square feet on the existing distribution facilities located at 1777 W. Center St. also will be constructed.

The company has estimated the value of the projects to be $28.3 million that will create an additional 142 jobs with total estimated salaries to be approximately $6.4 million.

The company also will invest $37.9 million in personal property or manufacturing and distribution equipment, which includes both projects.

Governor Mitch Daniels held a press conference Friday at the Zimmer Research and Development Center in Warsaw to announce that Zimmer will expand its manufacturing and distribution facilities in Warsaw.

The council also reviewed city budget recommendations for 2007.

The city has until May 16 to request adjustments to the Indiana Office of the Department of Local Government Finance.

Councilman Bob Morrison informed the council a motorcycle benefit ride sponsored by American Legion Post 49 will be held July 28 in Warsaw.

The Corporal Fribley Young Tiger Ride will be held to remember Lance Corp. David Fribley and Warsaw Vietnam veterans Lt. Col. Russell Arden Poor and Maj. William Lee Nellans. Proceeds from the event will benefit Young Tigers Football League.

The council reviewed Indiana Association of Cities and Towns House Bill 1478 passed by the House and Senate. The bill includes a local option income tax that authorizes additional rates using current adoption mechanisms to fund levy growth up to a maximum rate of 1 percent.

A Warsaw Fire Department activity report for March was reviewed and included 113 responses.

The council also reviewed a conflict of interest statement from city councilman George Clemens, who serves as chairman and co-owner of Rabb-Kinetico Water Systems Inc.

Councilman Jeff Grose informed the council the deer task force will meet Wednesday at 7 p.m. at city hall to discuss results from the deer reduction effort in Warsaw.
