City OKs United Steel Workers Offer To Buy Boggs Building

United Steel Workers Local 809 has purchased the Warsaw Parks Department Boggs Building. Warsaw Board of Public Works and Safety approved the purchase contract during its meeting Friday for the building at 420 Little League Drive. United Steel Workers purchased the building for $90,000. The building previously housed Warsaw Parks Department recreation offices that are now in the Pete Thorn Center. Also during the meeting, Jennifer Whitaker, Warsaw human resources director, informed the council that the clerk-treasurer’s office received notification Thursday that an employee from the clerk-treasurer’s office will take another job. Whitaker said the city is in the process of interviews, background checks and drug screening for a new employee to fill the position. The employee’s last day will be Aug. 3 when the replacement’s name will be announced at that board of works meeting. The board gave Whitaker permission to start the hired individual, pending background checks for training purposes. In other business, the board approved an interlocal agreement between the city and Kosciusko County for resurfacing a portion of Fox Farm Road. The city is in the process of constructing a force main for sewage treatment that runs south to north along Fox Farm Road. The county will reimburse Warsaw $43,613.70 for the cost of resurfacing the west portion of Fox Farm Road upon completion of the resurfacing. The board approved Indiana Arts Commission grant funding for 2012 and 2013 for $2,281 for Friday Evening Performing Arts Series and Culture Fest. The board also approved an events contract for the Family Carnival Aug. 3. The board approved Warsaw Street Department purchasing a garbage truck for $106,000 from Lee Batalis Construction & Excavating Inc. The board approved Warsaw Police Department accepting $25,000 in funding for a DUI Task Force Indiana enforcement grant. The task force will pay officers’ overtime for selective patrols and sobriety checkpoints of impaired and dangerous driving. The board also approved $54,000 in Operation Pull Over grant funding to pay officers’ overtime to enforce Indiana law for those not wearing their safety belts, impaired driving and child restraint violations. The board approved a $63,000 Fatal Accident Crash Team funding to pay officers’ overtime for investigating and prosecuting fatality and serious bodily injury traffic accidents that involve alcohol, drugs or reckless driving. The board approved a six-month review and pay increase for Justin Miller, Warsaw Fire Department firefighter, at $1,566.60 bi-weekly. The board approved cell phone allowances for employees who have been recommended by their department heads for city cell phone allowance. Todd Slabaugh, building commissioner, and Joe Hawn, WPD corporal, were approved for cell phones for limited city business. In other business, the board approved a YMCA trademark sub-license agreement for Play It Safe Family Safety Day Sept. 8 at Central Park and Center Lake Pavilion. The agreement will allow the department to use the YMCA logo on printed materials. The YMCA will have a fitness stage demonstrating different types of exercises promoting a healthy lifestyle. The board approved a change order pending approval for milling and resurfacing the southbound lane of Fox Farm Road from Lake Street to the bridge before CR 150W.
