Warsaw City Council Monday approved fund transfers that will allow the city to purchase two police vehicles and move a tornado siren from the former city hall to Fire Station 1. The council approved transfers totaling $64,000 into the police machinery and equipment fund for the purchase of two vehicles from Kelley Chevrolet, Fort Wayne. The vehicles will be used by Warsaw Police Department’s school resource officers. The council also approved transferring $12,840 from salaries and wages into other capital outlays to allow the city’s tornado siren at the former city hall on Market Street to be moved to Fire Station 1 on Main Street. The transfer will allow J&K Communications, Columbia City, to be paid $8,565 to install a 70-foot pole at station 1 and Dennie Electric to be paid $4,275 to unhook and remove power from the former emergency horn and run new power to fire station 1. A new siren would cost $28,604.71, Mike Brubaker, Warsaw fire chief, said. In other business, on second reading the council approved an ordinance that prohibits parking on designated truck routes at Zimmer Road within the city limits, Zimmer Lane from Zimmer Road to Hepler Drive, Hepler Drive from West Center Street to Zimmer Lane, and West Center Street from Hepler Drive to Hand Avenue. The council also approved transferring $40,200 from street salaries to the street main budget repairs and maintenance for fall leaf crew hiring; transferring $45,000 from street other services to street main budget operating supplies for fuel and tires; and transferring $100,000 from street machinery and equipment to the street main budget repairs and maintenance to allow for additional asphalting. The council heard a presentation from Cheryl Conley, OrthoWorx president, who requested the city provide the organization with $50,000. Recently, the Lilly Endowment again invested in OrthoWorx, making a grant of up to $7.5 million to support the organization’s work. With $4 million upfront, there is an additional match opportunity of $3.5 million. The endowment will match qualifying donations dollar for dollar made before Oct. 15.
