City OKs Ordinance On First Reading To Make Dubois Drive One WayOn first reading Monday, the Warsaw City Council approved an ordinance to make Dubois Drive a one-way street westbound between Parker Street and Provident Drive.

The council will review the ordinance again at its June 21 meeting.

The council approved the recommendation from Warsaw Traffic Safety Commission.

Commission Administrator Kip Shuter attended Monday's meeting and said the commission looked at many options to remove conflicts at the intersection of Dubois Drive and Parker Street.

"At peak times, traffic backs up and drivers become impatient, resulting in many traffic violations that also become a very real traffic safety issue," Shuter said. "This change removes these conflicts and allows for direct access to businesses, but most important is the improved safety and flow through this intersection."

He said a neighborhood meeting previously was held and attended by neighbors and business representatives adjacent to the area to inform them of the decision for the one-way street.

The ordinance also requests a yield sign for eastbound Dubois Drive traffic to reinforce that traffic yield the right of way to westbound traffic as they turn.

The council also approved an ordinance prohibiting parking on either side of JaLynn Street. This is the street that passes between Walmart and Lowe's. A future senior development to the northwest of Walmart will necessitate no parking on JaLynn Street.

The council also:

n Approved an ordinance to transfer $40,500 for Warsaw Municipal Airport to cover unanticipated expenses incurred.

The expenses are for the removal of trees on the east side of the airport, to protect the Instrument Landing System equipment and obstruction clearance west of the runway.

n Approved the removal of two street lights on Parker Street.

The two street lights were not removed with the original seven street lights in December because of their location. The project calls for new street lights, most of which are currently being constructed that will be placed throughout the project as it is completed.

n Approved an ordinance allowing the city to contribute $50,000 from its rainy day fund for money necessary to fund Kosciusko Economic Development Corp.

The council discussed 'First Friday' that is held the first Friday of each month on the Kosciusko County courthouse lawn.

Council President Joe Thallemer said he felt the first event went well, and he is encouraging for kid-friendly events to continue to be held.
