Efforts to reduce the deer herd in the Warsaw city limits began Monday.

During Monday night's Warsaw City Council meeting, Warsaw Deer Task Force chair Jeff Grose said there were 70 archers who qualified to participate in this year's deer reduction efforts. He said that does not necessarily mean all 70 archers will hunt.

Grose said archers will hunt on weekdays, but not on holidays in the reduction zones.

Archers also will hunt on private property that has been approved by land owners.

Hunting season runs until Nov. 28 and Dec. 4 to Jan. 2.

This is the fourth year for the efforts and reduction zones include the wooded areas in Boggs Industrial Park, the former Madison School, Springhill and Kosciusko Community Hospital, Hire Park and Lakeview Middle School.

Last years efforts resulted in 50 deer being harvested.

The council also approved a 2011 salary ordinance on second reading.

The vote was 5-1 with councilmen Joe Thallemer, Charlie Smith, George Clemens, Jeff Grose and Dan Hampton voting in favor of the salary ordinance. Councilman Kyle Babcock voted against the salary ordinance. Councilman Jerry Patterson was absent during Monday's meeting.

Babcock previously expressed at the council's Aug. 16 meeting that he was concerned with the parks department wanting to hire a year-round part time clerical position to assist its activities director.

In other business the council approved reductions to the 2010 budget.

Reductions include $393,750 to the general fund; $24,200 from the parks and recreation fund; $2,000 from the cemetery fund; $7,000 from the aviation fund; and $85,000 from the Warsaw/Wayne Township Fire Territory.

Reductions from the street department include $61,000; and $197,000 from the police general fund.

The council also reviewed a draft of the new personnel policy handbook for city employees. The council will review the handbook and discuss it at its next meeting.

The council also on second reading approved a fire territory salary ordinance and a 2011 elected officials salary ordinance.
