Warsaw has been awarded a $2.4 million grant to put towards Husky Trail improvements.
Warsaw Mayor Joe Thallemer made the announcement during Friday’s Warsaw Board of Public Works and Safety meeting.
“This is a project we have had our eye on that we were very interested in pursuing and thankfully we were able to obtain federal and state funding,” Thallemer said.
Jeff Grose, board of works member, made the motion to approve the grant funding, seconded by board member Charlie Smith.
Indiana Department of Transportation awarded the city the grant.
The project will entail road widening, intersection improvements at multiple intersections including Mariner Drive and North Point Drive and sidewalks for better pedestrian traffic safety.
The project will begin engineering in 2013, with the expected construction date of 2015 to 2016 depending on the date the project goes to bid and seasonal construction, according to Jeremy Skinner, city planner.
Neighboring residents, Warsaw Community School Corporation and councilman Jeff Grose worked on letters of support for the project, Skinner said.
“Their commitment and support for this project will play a significant role in making this a great community project to better improve the safety and traffic flow along Husky Trail,” Skinner said.
Also during the meeting the board heard the city has been awarded a $24,000 grant from the K21 Health Foundation.
The grant fundins is for bike lanes and shared lane markings and accompanying signage for Smith and South McKinley Streets and Winona Avenue.
The markings will be completed in the next couple of weeks, and the signage installed as soon as possible.
