City Approves Agreement With Animal Welfare League

Posted

An agreement with the Animal Welfare League was approved Friday by the Warsaw Board of Public Works and Safety.

The AWL agreed to accept and provide temporary care and/or disposition of animals that may be found in Warsaw. In return, Warsaw will pay the Animal Welfare League $10,000 per year.

Mayor Ernie Wiggins said the payment will be made in 12 monthly installments, is effective for one year and started Jan.1.

In other business:

• Board members tabled a sales agreement from Nisource Corporate Services Co.

Jerry Patterson, board member, said members should "table the agreement until we can clean it up a little bit."

• Board members approved the acceptance and treatment of Winona Lake sewage.

Board members approved the agreement with the addition of a 10-year limit for the contract.

• "Effective April 16, I have appointed Matt Warren to assume the duties of chief of the Warsaw Fire Department," Wiggins said.

Board members approved Warren's appointment.

Ken Shepherd, former Warsaw fire chief, "goes down to parade rank of captain," Wiggins said.

• Board members also approved an increase in salary for WFD firefighter/driver David Vercauteren.

Vercauteren completed his six-month probationary period and, according to his shift officers, "is doing very well."

• Warsaw building inspector Pam Kennedy requested the release of two liens for Alejandro G. Magos, 1837 Michaels St.

The liens, paid on March 29, totaled $540 and were for cleanup and boarding of the property.

Kennedy said the "house is being sold" but a $6,000 lien still exists.

Board members did not approve the release of that lien because it has not yet been paid.

• Warsaw Parks activity director Andy McCleary requested approval for a payment of $5,000 to the band Curious George and the High Voltage for a concert scheduled Saturday at the park.

Board members approved McCleary's request.

They also approved a payment of $660 to Brent Evans for a perfomance scheduled for June 23.

Three additional contracts were approved for the Cinco de Mayo Festival.

• Oakwood Cemetery Sexton David Shaw requested permission to trade in two pieces of equipment: a 1996 Toro 24HP riding mower and a 1996 Toro 60-inch deck. Shaw's request was approved.
