Oakwood Cemetery soon will have a new road at the cemetery that will allow for burial lots.
Cemetery Sexton Hal Heagy informed board members during Thursday's Oakwood Cemetery Board of Regents meeting that the road will be completed by the end of this month, weather permitting. The board approved a motion at its August meeting allowing a road to be constructed east of Willow Street in the cemetery. The road will make room for 1,100 lots, and be called Chestnut Street to keep in line with the current street names at the cemetery, Heagy said.
The road will not open until next year.
Engineer Larry Long has set stakes out for the new road, and Street Superintendent Lacy Francis will work on the project.
Heagy also said 18 foundations need to be poured this month.
Board member Lewis Dobbins suggested the board consider raising burial lot prices with the new lots going in.
He said lot prices at the cemetery have not increased since 2001, and more residents not from Warsaw are being buried at the cemetery.
Board President Warren Tatter said he will consider prices for the lots and make suggestions to the board.
There were 22 burials at the cemetery in August, and eight deeds were signed during the meeting.
Heagy said he is getting quotes on the cemetery purchasing a dump truck that will need to be approved by the Board of Public Works and Safety.
He said the cemetery hopes to purchase the truck at the end of this month or early October.
Also during the meeting, Vice President Bob Sandy announced his resignation. He said Thursday was his last meeting and he is moving to Galena, Ill., to be closer to family. Sandy has served on the board since 1989.
Tatter thanked Sandy for his service on the board, and said he will inform Mayor Ernie Wiggins of Sandy's resignation.
