Area agencies are gearing up for an even larger number of families in need of a little extra help for the holidays.
Syracuse Food Pantry is now taking applications until Tuesday for the Adopt A Family program.Guidelines for the program include anyone who lives in Kosciusko County, have children up to the eighth grade residing in the home, families who have not been on the program for more than three years and do not have access to another Christmas program.
Anyone in Turkey Creek Township with children fifth grade and under may apply at the food pantry for the Adopt A Family program.
Combined Community Services will begin taking applications for the program Tuesday. Applications on Tuesday will be accepted for new families only.
On Wednesday, CCS will continue taking applications from anyone who meets guidelines until they are filled.
Ken Locke, Salvation Army ministries director, said he will begin taking applications for the Angel Tree program immediately following CCS's application process.
Angel Tree provides Christmas food and toys to Kosciusko County residents with children 13 and under who are not assisted by any other Christmas program.
"This year is going to be the largest in years. With recent job cuts and the high unemployment rate, families who never needed assistance will hopefully come to our agencies for help," said Peggi Lisenbee-Wright, CCS client assistance director.
People who are interested in helping a family with Christmas this year should stop by CCS, Salvation Army or Syracuse Food Pantry to select a family to support. The programs are supported entirely by community donations.
