CCS Gears Up For Annual Holiday Toy Giveaway

Posted

Toys are the staple Christmas gift for kids from 1 to 92. Often, by New Year's Eve, the novelty has worn off and the delights of last year are this year's castoffs.

In many cases, children simply outgrow the gadgets and games at the bottom of the toy box - and there they are, gathering dust and adding to the clutter.

Ami Pitt would like to sell those toys on consignment. Pitt is the Toy Giveaway coordinator, sponsored by Combined Community Services.

"Last year little more than 800 children received gently used and new toys," she said. "This year we expect more than a thousand children to benefit from the program."

To Pitt, the consignment sale is a great deal for recycling "old" toys and generating funds for new ones.

The sale is Dec. 14 from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Dec. 15 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Home and Family Arts Building on the Kosciusko County Fairgrounds. People can bring good quality toys to the building from Dec. 9 through Dec 12 from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. or Dec. 13 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The toys will be "garage sale" priced, according to Pitt, and the givers will receive 60 percent of the sale price.

"It's a good way to have a little extra money for Christmas," she said. "Anyone can purchase nice toys at a lower price, too."

Any toys that do not sell may be reclaimed or given to charity.

The other 40 percent of the sale price is used to buy new toys.

"We also use any monetary donations to buy new toys at Kay Bee Toys, who generously give us a 20 percent discount," she said.
