A caucus has been scheduled to fill the Warsaw City Council District 5 seat that will be vacated by Dan Hampton.
The caucus will be Dec. 22 at 7 p.m. at Warsaw City Hall. Precinct committee members Warren Tatter, Josh Spangle, Christy Polk and Jeremiah Heierman will select the person to fill the seat.
Interested eligible candidates must be registered voters of District 5, and file a declaration of candidacy form with Randy Girod, Kosciusko County GOP chairman, no later than 72 hours before the commencement of the caucus.
The declaration of candidacy forms are available at the Kosciusko County Clerk's office, 121 N. Lake St., beginning today.
Hampton submitted his resignation letter to Girod Wednesday.
Hampton's resignation letter states: As you are aware, on Nov. 2, 2010, the citizens of Kosciusko County elected me to serve a term as Kosciusko County Prosecuting Attorney, commencing Jan. 1, 2011.
Consequently, Indiana law requires that I resign my position as Warsaw City Councilman for the 5th District prior to that date.
Therefore, it is with great appreciation for the opportunity given to me to serve the citizens of the City of Warsaw's 5th District, that I submit my resignation to you, effective Dec. 31, 2010.
Since my appointment to the Warsaw City Council on Sept. 17, 2008, to fill the vacancy left by the death of councilman Bill Rhoades, I have endeavored to serve the citizens of my district with the same dedication, commitment and compassion as my predecessor.
I observed first-hand that providing the highest quality of municipal services is first and foremost in the minds of the mayor's office, city council, and city departments.
I was continually inspired by the enumerable examples that I witnessed of both the pride and commitment of city employees to performing their job functions to the best of their ability; and the generous contributions of time, talent and resources made by Warsaw citizens willing to make a difference in their community for the good of the whole.
To my successor, I offer my books, notes, and knowledge gained as a councilman, as well as my encouragement to strive to create and seize opportunities for development and growth for the City of Warsaw.
Opportunity encourages change - a philosophy that is not new to the City of Warsaw.
The thriving community that we all enjoy today is the product of innovation, hard work and an overall commitment to our fine city by its citizens, including business and government leaders.
Once again, I am thankful to the representatives of the Kosciusko County Republican Party who entrusted me with this opportunity to serve as councilman.
While my service as councilman has reached its conclusion, I look forward to serving my community in my role as Kosciusko County Prosecuting Attorney, and as a private citizen.
