SYRACUSE - A caucus of Republican precinct committeemen has been scheduled to fill the vacancy of Syracuse Town Councilwoman Cassandra Cowan.

The caucus will be June 1 at 7 p.m. at Syracuse Town Hall.

The caucus committee will include Charlene Knispel, Susan Myrick, Richard Dick and Karen Grady.

Cowan, who serves Ward 3, submitted her resignation effective June 1.

Randy Girod, Kosciusko County GOP chairman, said he received a letter from Cowan Wednesday dated May 10 that said she is resigning for personal reasons.

Girod said he later talked to her about her resignation, and said she informed him that she is resigning to care for her husband, Don, who is in poor health.

Cowan could not be reached for comment.

Interested candidates for the position must file a declaration of candidacy with Girod no more than 72 hours, May 29 at 7 p.m., before the commencement of the caucus.

Declaration of candidacy forms are available from the Kosciusko County Clerk's Office, 121 N. Lake St., Warsaw.

To apply for the seat, a person must be a Ward 3 resident, and a registered voter age 18 and older.

Cowan currently serves on the council with Larry Siegel (Ward 1), Paul Stoelting (Ward 2), Brian Woody (Ward 4) and Bill Musser (Ward 5).
