Two years ago, Roann resident Jamie Lavy was diagnosed with breast cancer.
Lavy was 28 at the time and underwent eight rounds of chemotherapy at the Center of Hope Cancer Care at Kosciusko Community Hospital. He also had 35 days of radiation."There is not as much information about male breast cancer as there is for female breast cancer, but I wear a blue and pink ribbon to remind people how real breast cancer was in my life," Lavy said during Saturday's Kosciusko County Relay For Life Kick-Off.
Lavy wore the ribbon on his shirt Saturday.
Lavy is this year's Kosciusko County Relay For Life walk honoree.
Approximately 40 Kosciusko County residents attended the relay kick-off Saturday at the Warsaw Community Public Library.
Those who attended had the opportunity to listen to Lavy speak and collect team packets for this year's relay.
The Kosciusko County Relay For Life is May 3-4 at the Kosciusko Fairgrounds. The relay will begin at noon May 3 with an opening ceremony, and end May 4 at 8 a.m.
Proceeds will be donated to the American Cancer Society for cancer research.
During last year's relay, $59,000 was raised with the 24 teams who participated. This year's goal is to raise $75,000, according to walk chair Rick Enyart.
The year's relay theme is "'Toons Against Cancer." Participants will be encouraged to decorate their sleeping sites in a cartoon character theme.
A team captains meeting will be Feb. 12 at 7 p.m. at the library.
People with questions about the relay, or to register a team or volunteer, can call Enyart at 574-268-9535 or e-mail him at:
