There’s a story behind everything Bill Burr puts together or sends out of his shop. Burr opened Indiana Urban Lumber, 3309 E. Center St., Warsaw, after being laid off from his job. Doing what many others in a down economy have done, Burr decided to take his passion and try and turn it in to a new career. Burr offers five unique services through Indiana Urban Lumber: – Custom sawmill – Custom kiln drying – Custom surface planeing – Retail sales of kiln-dried hardwood – Custom woodworking Burr has been a woodworker and hobbyist for nearly 30 years. What’s unique about Burr’s business is that he uses local wood to build his pieces. “There’s a story behind everything in here,” said Burr. Burr also said while he won’t take down trees, he is willing to take away logs to use. Burr also welcomes people to come in with an idea of a dresser or end table and he can build it. One of his more intricate pieces came from wood when a tree fell during a storm at Goose Lake. Since Burr doesn’t buy logs, he said his prices are reasonable. “I’ll charge the same for walnut as I would for cottonwood,” said Burr. “I can beat the big box stores.” Burr said his business is also green while also being affordable. Indiana Urban Lumber is open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 8 to 5 p.m. Saturday.Burr encouraged people to come into his shop to look around at items or check out his workshop. Indiana Urban Lumber is next to Brouwers Carpet and Furniture, just east of the Center Center Plaza. For more information, call 574-268-WOOD or email indianaurbanlumber@yahoo.com
