Buggy Shop Bakery Serves Up Old Family Recipes

Posted
With a unique location and traditional cookies, breads and pies made from generations-old recipes, The Buggy Shop Bakery opened for business in late August.

Located inside Reneker’s Sport Shop, 624 N. Detroit St., Warsaw, the bakery is run by the husband and wife team of Paul and Dora Gingerich.

The couple commutes from Larwill every day to cook up recipes.

Paul said many people have asked why locate a bakery inside a sports shop.

“It makes sense to us,” said Paul. “We couldn’t ask for better neighbors.”

Paul said growing up in northern Michigan, his mother had a bakery in a rural area.

“The town was too small to support the bakery,” said Paul. “It was tourists who came to the river country there that supported us. If your products are good, people will show up.”

While the idea of a buggy conjures up images of Amish families traveling the backroads of Indiana, the bakery is not an Amish one per se.

Paul and Dora did say, however, the recipes are inspired by their family who were Amish.

“These recipes all come from my mom and grandma,” said Paul. “And (Dora)’s mother.”

They also get help from Dora’s sister, Vera, who is in the store every morning at 4 a.m. baking up cookies, pies and cakes.

With very little fanfare, The Buggy Shop Bakery has already gotten quite a response.

“We’re just so thankful to the community,” said Paul. “It’s been awesome.”

Each week, the bakery will add a new item to its menu.

They also do seasonal items and are currently gearing up for pumpkin season.

For larger orders, Dora asked that customers call to figure out how much lead time the bakery will need. That is also the case around holidays.

Along with breads, rolls, pies, cookies, hand pies and muffins, the bakery also features brownies, peanut butter, noodles, granola, grape nuts, jams and jellies.

The Buggy Shop Bakery is open from 6:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and Saturday from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.
