Warsaw Board of Public Works and Safety approved two new hires for Warsaw Police Department during its meeting Friday. The board approved hiring Jordan A. Foreman as a probationary police officer effective Dec. 11. Foreman will be hired to replace Scott Quillen, who is scheduled to retire June 1. Hiring Foreman will allow the Warsaw Police Department ample time for training purposes. Foreman was recommended by the WPD Review Board during its latest hiring process and has been approved by the 1977 Police and Firefighters pension. Foreman’s bi-weekly salary will be $1,438.22. Foreman comes from South Bend Memorial Hospital as a paramedic. He worked three years for Multi-Township EMS and has an associate’s degree from Ivy Tech Community College. He will go to the police academy for training Jan. 3. The board also approved hiring Jamie Overbey as a WPD police mechanic at $16 per hour. Overbey replaces Jim Craig, who will work at Oakwood Cemetery. In other business, the board approved a contract for Neal McCoy to be the headlining artist for next year’s Warsaw Parks Department’s country music in Central Park. The concert is July 20 at 8 p.m. The board approved 2012 supply bids, including limestone with Irving Materials; ready mix concrete with Aggregate Concrete; flowable back material with Kuert Concrete; bituminous material and curb concrete with Phend & Brown; and flatwork concrete with Sterling Contracting LLC. The board approved waiving the sewage bill at 1405 Ranch Road. Building Commissioner Todd Slabaugh evaluated the residence conditions and posted the structure as unsafe and not to be entered. Slabaugh noted the residence has not been occupied for five years, there is no electrical service and no water, and water lines in the slab floor froze and burst. The board also approved a contract with Wightman Petrie to do an assessment on asbestos and lead painting for the new city hall. The board heard from Dan Brown, Phend & Brown, that the Claypool bridge overpass will be demolished starting Feb. 15 and the bridge overpass will be rebuilt four feet higher. The project will be completed at the end of August. The board approved temporarily closing Main Street between Lake and Buffalo streets, and North Buffalo Street, Main to Center streets for First Friday Hometown HollyDays Dec. 2 from 3 to 9 p.m. The board approved a Warsaw Volunteer Fire Department 2012 agreement. The Warsaw-Wayne Township Fire Protection Territory will pay $44,860 to Warsaw Volunteer Fire Department. The fire department will disperse this payment to its members as reimbursement for expenses and contribution to the clothing and automobile allowance.
