Book Club Husbands dedicated their Community Quiz Bowl win Tuesday to a team member who couldn’t be there. Wearing matching blue and gray shirts and cheered on with handmade signs in the crowd, the club eked out a win at the education fundraiser with 51 questions answered out of 60. They beat second-place Miller’s Merry Manor and third-place Maple Leaf Farms, who each answered 50 questions. The Husbands said their win was in honor of Roger M. Burger, a team member from their second-place finish last year. Burger died in April 2012 while snorkeling in Belize. The five-member team said they weren’t even sure they could win without Burger, calling him the brain of the group. “We were bummed we got second last year,” team member Chris Willig said. “We did not prepare much this year; we’re just a bunch of guys with smart wives.” The tie between Maple Leaf and Miller’s was determined by Miller’s streak of 20 consecutive correct answers. 53 teams competed in the 14th quiz bowl, sponsored by the Warsaw Education Foundation. The categories were 2012: Year in Review, Academics, American Composers and Health and Wellness. Valedictorian level sponsors were Depuy Synthes, Maple Leaf Farms, and Esther Pfleiderer Charitable Trust/1st Source Bank Honor Roll level sponsors were Hall & Marose Silveus, Louis Dreyfus Commodities, Warsaw Morning Optimist Club, Pam and Todd Weingart and Zimmer. The Warsaw Education Foundation provides funding, through community support, to advance enrichment opportunities, innovative and inventive teaching, and academic exploration in Warsaw Community Schools.
