Board Of Works Approves Sweeper, Truck Purchases

City streets will be even neater and cleaner after the Warsaw Board of Public Works and Safety Friday unanimously approved the purchase of a new street sweeper and garbage truck.

The board authorized the purchase of a new Elgin street sweeper from Deed's Equipment for $84,744, and a new Leach garbage truck from Best Equipment for $109,786.

Each vehicle will be purchased under three-year lease/purchase agreements.

The down payment for the sweeper is $35,000 and the annual payments are $18,263 each. For the garbage truck, the down payment is $50,000 and the annual payments are $20,013.96.

Deeds was not the lowest bidder, but was awarded the bid because of other savings the street department would realize through consistency of parts and materials, according to Superintendent Lacy Francis.

"I'm recommending going with the Deeds Equipment bid on the Elgin machine even though it is a little higher because we already have the accessory equipment and spare parts, such as brushes, that fit it, so we wouldn't have to go to the additional expense of replacing all of that," Francis said.
