Board Of Works Approves Street Closures, Payments

Posted
At its meeting late Friday morning, the City of Warsaw Board of Public Works and Safety approved closing two roads for separate events.
Canal Street, between Indiana and Detroit streets, will be closed from 7 a.m. June 11 to 5 p.m. June 12 for the Lakes Festival. Heather James, event coordinator for the Center for Lakes & Streams, said the route is the same as was closed for the event in 2015. Mayor Joe Thallemer said he didn’t have a problem with it, and the road closure was approved.
The other roads to be closed is Lincoln Street between Main and Clark streets and Fort Wayne Street from Lincoln Street to Lindberg Street from 9 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. May 27 for Lincoln Elementary School’s field day. Teacher Scott Sterk said because of the new school construction and lack of green space, they were requesting the road closure and had a plan in place to notify neighbors and parents. Most of the activity will be along Lincoln Street. The Board approved the street closure request.
In other business, the Board approved:
• New hires: Keith Jones, street department, foreman, $18.24 hourly, new position, effective April 24; Raymond Behling, building and planning department, building commissioner, $26.39 hourly, new position, effective Sunday; Andrew Meads, street department, equipment operator, $16 hourly, replacement hire, effective Sunday; and Brandon Cordell, wastewater treatment utility department, stormwater technician, $16.40 hourly, new hire, effective Sunday.

• A pay voucher for $28,475 to purchase two more right-of-way parcels for the Husky Trail Project. City Planner Jeremy Skinner said the city has purchased about 15 so far with about eight more to buy.

The fixed fuel price for 2017 is $1.96 for unleaded, and is $2.10 for 2016. If the WPD uses more than 75,000 gallons, the cost is the price at the pump minus a 5-cent-per-gallon discount.
