Big Brothers Big Sisters Expanding Lunch Buddy Program Across Kosciusko County

Posted

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northeast Indiana (BBBSNEI) is seeking caring adults to become Lunch Buddies for elementary students throughout Kosciusko County.
With a commitment of just one lunch hour each week, volunteers can provide encouragement, friendship and a consistent presence that helps a child thrive, according to a news release from BBBSNEI.
The Site-Based Lunch Buddy program partners with elementary schools across the county, allowing volunteers to meet with the same student during their lunch period each week. The commitment is simple, but the impact is lasting, the release states.
Currently, 76 Lunch Buddy matches are meeting in Kosciusko County elementary schools. However, many more students have been identified by teachers, counselors and school staff as children who would benefit from having a caring adult consistently show up just for them.
Big Brothers Big Sisters is actively working to expand the Lunch Buddy program at every elementary school in Kosciusko County so that more children have the opportunity to build a meaningful relationship with a trusted adult.
"Sometimes all it takes is knowing someone is excited to see you each week," said Tammy Smith, director of community development for BBBSNEI. "A Lunch Buddy provides consistency, encouragement and a listening ear. That relationship can make a tremendous difference in a child's confidence, school experience and future."
While the impact on children is significant, volunteers often say they benefit just as much. Spending an hour with a child offers a refreshing break from the workday, an opportunity to laugh, play games, share stories and reconnect with what matters most. Many Lunch Buddies describe it as the highlight of their week, returning to work energized and inspired.
The program is completely voluntary. Students are referred by school staff and participate only with parent or guardian permission. Volunteers are carefully screened, trained and supported by Big Brothers Big Sisters before being matched with a student.
Whether you work nearby, are retired, have a flexible schedule or simply want to make a difference in your community, becoming a Lunch Buddy is an easy and meaningful way to invest in the next generation, just one lunch hour each week.
