Five 4-H barn teams competed Saturday for the right to fly the Battle of the Barns flag in their barn for the next year, but it was the Beef Barn in their purple shirts that won the day after eight contests.
They competed against the poultry/llama/rabbit barn in green; the goat barn in red; the swine barn in yellow; and the dairy barn in orange.
Points were racked up in the first seven contests - egg toss, sack race, Heart of 4-H, straw bale relay, cookie stack, water sponge relay and wheelbarrow relay to determine which two teams would compete in tug-of-war - the final competition - for the flag. Only five points separated the teams, but with 28 points for Dairy Barn and 29 for Beef Barn, the tug-of-war contest was set.
The Goat Barn earned 27 points, with the barns of swine and poultry/llama/rabbit tieing at 24.
Both teams in the tug-of-war pulled and held on, but in the end the Dairy Barn just couldn’t pull the Beef Barn over to their side, so the Beef Barn got to celebrate in the John Anglin Jr. Memorial Show Arena at the Kosciusko Community 4-H Fairgrounds.
The annual Battle of the Barns wasn’t just all about fun, however, as a total of $4,137 was raised during the Heart of 4-H contest in 1 minute, 12 seconds. The Goat Barn raised the most of that with $1,909. The funds will go to local food pantries.
