Atwood Fire Department Battles Two Fires WednesdayATWOOD – Atwood firefighters were kept busy early Wednesday morning responding to two fires.
At 4 a.m. the Atwood Fire Department responded to a call of a medium-sized garage fire at 4413 W. Crystal Lake Road, Warsaw, owned by Jerry and Sandra Tinkey. Warsaw-Wayne Fire Territory provided a tanker assist.
Captain Randall Byrer, AFD, said along with the complete loss of the garage, the contents inside it were damaged, including two vehicles, a lawnmower and other items. He estimated damage was over $100,000, but said the owner was able to back out one of the cars from the garage, which had a cracked windshield and smoke damage.
There were no injuries, and the cause is unknown and still under investigation. About 20 firefighters were on scene for about three hours.
Just a few hours before the garage fire, the Atwood Fire Department responded to an electric water heater fire in the basement at 2511 N. CR 700W, Warsaw. County records indicate the home is owned by the Ray Williamson Living Trust.
Byrer said the two people in the home were woke up by smoke alarms. “Smoke detectors do save lives,” he said.
The call came in shortly after midnight Wednesday.
The cause of the fire was an electrical short in the water heater, and damage was contained to the water heater and smoke, Byrer said. One of the persons staying in the home helped put out most of the fire with a fire extinguisher before the fire department arrived.
