Area Roundup: Triton Wrestler Wins Regional Title

MISHAWAKA – James Snyder is the champion.

The Triton High School senior wrestler moved from 182 pounds to 195 pounds for the state tournament, and still emerged victorious in his weight class at Saturday’s Penn Regional.

Snyder pulled off a 12-7 decision over Penn’s Rockne Hurley.

Wawasee had two individual champions. Geremiah Brooks won by a 12-4 major decision over Penn’s Nate Hadary at 132 pounds, while Braxton Alexander pinned Mishawaka’s Gabriel Weeks at 145 pounds.

Dylan Tom (106 pounds), Jace Alexander (120) and Garrett Stuckman (145) all posted second-place finishes for the Warriors.

Warsaw had two runners-up. Jose Grimmett (152) and Brandon Estepp (160) both finished second.

Tippecanoe Valley’s Drake Montelongo was the runner-up at 113 pounds.

Warsaw’s Jacob Bass competed in the consolation round, and earned a third-place finish at 145 pounds with a 16-3 major decision over Plymouth’s Fernando Rebollo.

Wawasee’s Isiah Faurote (152) won a 6-2 decision over Saint Joseph’s Jonny Scott for third place, while Hagaen Slusher won by fall over Adams’ Joe Phillips at 285 pounds.

Alex Castro (182) and Damien Rodriguez (195) placed fourth for the Warriors.

The top four finishers in each weight class will compete Saturday at 9 a.m. at the East Chicago Semistate.



Warsaw Wins Girls

Swimming Sectional

The?Warsaw girls swimming and diving team won its own sectional Saturday.

Warsaw had a team total of 416 points, while Manchester was seventh (126 points) and Tippecanoe Valley placed 11th (77.5 points).

The Lady Tigers’ team of Lean Reinholt, Delaney Wihebrink, Taylor?Gunter and Olivia Herman won the 200 medley relay in 1:52.46.

Gunter won the 200 IM (2:22.35), and combined with Herman, Lillian Boston and Wihebrink to win the 200 freestyle relay (1:42).

Wihebrink won the 100 breaststroke in 1:04.75.

Manchester’s Halle Briner placed first and set a school record in the 100 butterfly (58.60), while also finishing first in the 200 freestyle (1:54.87).

All first-place finishers advanced to the state finals.



Wawasee Places 4th

At Concord Sectional

DUNLAP – The Wawasee girls swimming and diving team had a team score of 164 to finish fourth at Saturday’s Concord Sectional.

The?Lady?Warriors did not have any first-place finishers, so none advanced to state.

However, Rileigh Atwood set a school record by swimming the 100 breaststroke in 1:07.32.

Northridge won the sectional with a team score of 538.



Valley Advances To Sectional Title Game

LIGONIER – The Tippecanoe Valley girls basketball team stayed alive?Saturday.

Sophie Bussard scored 26 points to lead the Lady?Vikings to a 68-54 win over Lakeland in a Class 3A Sectional 21 semifinal at West Noble

Valley led 20-15 after the first quarter and 31-22 at halftime.

The Lady?Vikings extended their lead to double digits by the end of the third quarter, and rolled to victory in the fourth.

Jillian Walls and Sidney Wagner scored 11 points each for Valley (16-6).

The win is the second over Lakeland for Valley this season.

The teams faced off in December at the?West Noble Classic. The Lady Vikings rallied from down by 12 points to win 47-46.

The Lady?Vikings also won 42-36 over West Noble in the same tournament.

The Lady?Vikings are going for their fourth sectional title in five years.

They will face host West Noble (16-5) today at 7 p.m. in the sectional championship game.



Whitko’s Road Ends

At Central Noble

ALBION – The Whitko girls basketball team’s season ended with a 76-27 loss Saturday in a Class 2A Sectional 35 semifinal at Central Noble.

“Defending state champion and undefeated Central Noble showed why they are the overwhelming favorite to repeat (as state champions),” said Whitko coach Rick Bragg.

Central Noble jumped out to a 24-4 lead by the end of the first quarter and never relented.

Ellie Snep scored 10 points and pulled down 13 rebounds for Whitko (5-18), while Emalee Duggins scored 11 points and Kayla Schipper added six points.

“I am so grateful for having had the opportunity to see the growth of our seniors these last two years in what (Emalee), Ellie, Kayla and Sarah (Hewitt) gave to the girls basketball program on and off the court,” Bragg said. “All four are special young ladies who have learned valuable life skills through basketball that will make them successful in whatever they pursue in life.”



Warsaw Takes 4th At

Lakeland Invitational

LAPAZ – Warsaw placed fourth and Wawasee was fifth at Saturday’s Lakeland Gymnastics Invitational.

Carroll won the event with a team total of 198.275, while Warsaw had a score of 101.7 and Wawasee tallied 99.425.

Warsaw’s Remi Beckham placed fifth on floor with a score of 9.35, and was sixth all-around with a score of 35.

Wawasee’s Jada Parzygnot was tied for fifth on vault (9) and tied for sixth on floor (9.25), while Aundreya Wegener was tied for fifth on beam (8.75) and ninth on floor (9.2).

Parzygnot was eighth all-around (34.65).



LCA Edges Smith Academy

FORT WAYNE – Landon Twombly scored 21 points to lead the Lakeland Christian boys basketball team to a 56-50 win Saturday at Fort Wayne?Smith Academy.

LCA’s Matthew Helton had a game-changing steal and layup in the fourth quarter that sparked an 11-2 run and surged the Cougars to victory.

Jake Harmon had 15 points, six rebounds and four assists for the Cougars (6-11), while Cameron Shepherd scored eight points and Braxton Keller pulled down six boards.

Lakeland Christian will play at home Friday against South Bend Career Academy.



Triton Trounces Caston

BOURBON – Ashton?Oviedo scored 14 points to lead the Triton boys basketball team to a 50-26 Hoosier North Athletic Conference win Saturday against Caston.

The?Trojans (6-8, 3-2 HNAC) limited the Comets (3-10, 1-3 HNAC) to single-digit scoring in every quarter.

Beau Hepler added nine points for the?Trojans.

Triton won 40-37 in the JV game.

The Trojans will play Friday at HNAC foe LaVille.

 

Miller, Hoffert Lead Wawasee To Victory

GOSHEN – Austin Miller scored 13 points and grabbed six rebounds as the Wawasee boys basketball team won 41-35 Saturday at Bethany?Christian.

Bennett Hoffert scored 12 points, while Ethan Hardy added eight points for the?Warriors.

Wawasee trailed 6-4 after the first quarter and 20-16 at halftime.

The?Warriors turned the tide in the second half by outscoring Bethany?Christian 10-8 in the third quarter and 15-7 in the fourth for the victory.

The?Warriors won 52-12 in the JV game.

Wawasee (5-11) will host Northridge Tuesday.



Vikings Mash Maconaquah

AKRON – Tanner Trippiedi was all over the court in the Tippecanoe Valley boys basketball team’s 60-48 Three Rivers Conference home win Saturday against Maconaquah.

Trippiedi had 16 points, seven rebounds and five assists, while Parkur Dalrymple scored 15 points and?Wes Melanson added nine points.

Valley (9-8, 5-2 TRC) led 15-14 after the first quarter and 32-24 at halftime.

The Vikings were outscored 14-9 in the third quarter to head into the fourth up 41-38, but nearly doubled Maconaquah’s fourth-quarter total for the double-digit victory.

Valley will host Wabash Tuesday in a TRC matchup.



Warsaw Freshmen Beat FW North Side

Leading from start to finish, the Warsaw freshman boys basketball team beat Fort Wayne North Side 45-29 Saturday.

All 14 players on the roster got in the game for the Tigers, and 10 of them scored.

Judah Simfukwe led Warsaw with 19 points.

The Tigers are 15-1 overall and 6-0 in the NLC. Warsaw will play in the NLC Tournament starting Thursday when it hosts Elkhart Memorial.



Wawasee Freshmen

Fall To Angola

SYRACUSE – The Wawasee freshman boys basketball team lost 43-37 Saturday in a home game against Angola.

Landon Gause led the Warriors (10-5, 3-3 Northern Lakes?Conference) with 17 points, while Gavin Hunziker scored eight points.
