The Kosciusko County Archaeology Society is sponsoring Dr. Robert McCullough, of IPFW, who will speak Tuesday about the investigation of late prehistoric earthen enclosures in Indiana.
McCullough has been involved in several Indiana artifact digs in the Kosciusko County area.
The society welcomes new members. Annual dues are $15 for individuals or $25 per family. The group meets the second Saturday of each month at 8:30 a.m. in the city hall, 302 Market St., Warsaw.
"We welcome all ages interested in gaining knowledge about prehistoric Indians and mastodons that lived here before us," said Bill Wilson, the society's president.
The society's goal is to physically search for, research, record and preserve records of prehistoric animal and human activity in Kosciusko County.
Projects include:
Researching, surveying and recording the location of all known sites where mammoth or mastodon remains may have been discovered.
Researching and recording early Indiana villages or campsite locations. Limit the work to the years prior to the government giving Indians land sections for their use since this information is fairly well documented.
Searching for evidence of Paleolithic man's activity in Kosciusko County by means of surveys to locate Paleolithic point types such as Clovis, Cumberland, Debert, Dalton and the like. Record location of verifiable finds.
Create a map of historic Indiana trails in the county by using records of the first county survey, combined with current topographical maps.
Recording the location of Indiana burial mounds and other known burials from earlier excavations and records.
Conduct field surveys of sites for potential excavation.
The Archeology Society has an exhibit of artifacts on display in the library through the September.

Gifted Childrens Association Forming
BY DAVID SLONE, Times-Union Staff Writer
Parents with gifted children will be able to network with one another soon.
Lori Lewis, who moved to the Warsaw area from Texas in November, is starting up a new countywide group. The Kosciusko Gifted Association's first meeting is scheduled for Sept. 19 at 6:30 p.m. at the Warsaw Community Public Library.
"It will be very member driven," said Lewis.
According to Lewis, the Indiana Association for the Gifted last year implemented a support system for gifted parent groups. The local group stems from that. Typically, she said, the groups for parents of gifted children are advocate and support organizations. The local group probably will begin by focusing on support so parents can connect with one another.
At the first meeting, Lewis said, she will talk about the difference between bright and gifted students. Most people don't understand the difference, she said. "I'll go over those unique differences." After that, the meeting will be an open forum.
The KGA will be open to Kosciusko County gifted students, parents and educators. A parent's child does not have to be officially labeled as gifted for the parent to be a part of the group. The mission of the KGA is to be a forum for awareness, support and education of gifted students.
Lewis said she has a background in elementary education and sociology. She was a teacher, but never fit in with her colleagues, though she said her students did well. She decided to stay at home and work with her son. She realized there was something different with him and had him assessed. Because of him, she learned more about gifted education and got involved with the Texas Association for the Gifted. Through TAG, she learned about the parent support group.
Several schools later, her husband was hired by Zimmer and they moved to Indiana.
"Indiana is years behind what's going on in gifted education," she said. Fortunately, she said there is some positive movement in the state.
The Kosciusko Gifted Association will help parents learn more and network. Since it will be a county group, the meeting locations and times will change as needed.
