Antique Road Show Puts Value On Antiques, Collectibles

The Kosciusko County Historical Society will host an Antique Road Show Style Appraisal at the Old Jail Museum Oct. 6.

The event begins at 9 a.m. and ends at 1 p.m. Appraisers will be on hand to evaluate antiques and related items.

Antique dealer and appraiser Janet Brooks, Bourbon, said antique owners often seek appraisals of their items out of curiosity, but appraisals can also serve a practical purpose.

"Suppose you had a fire or disaster," Brooks said. "You need to know the value of your antiques for insurance purposes."

Brooks said owners are often surprised to hear how much items that may have been lying around their houses for years are actually worth.

"I get a lot of, 'Oh wow! I didn't think it was worth that much,'" she said.

Members of the Kosciusko County Archaeology Society will attend the road show to identify and appraise Native American artifacts.

Archaeology Society chairman Bill Wilson said typical items he appraises are arrow points and other stone tools used by Native Americans in the past. He said getting an appraisal is a good way to make sure an item is authentic.

"We get a lot of points brought in to be appraised to ensure that they are real, not made through napping," Wilson said.

For a fee of $3, members of the public may have up to three items appraised. The museum is at 121 N. Lake St., Warsaw. For more information, call 574-269-1078.
