Comic book lovers can find out what “Future’s End” has in store for them when they pick up their free issue Saturday at Chimp’s Comix & Video Games.
Saturday is Free Comic Book Day. It’s held on the first weekend of May every year to promote reading and comic books.
Chimp’s Comix, 919 E. Winona Ave., Warsaw, is giving away comics from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Owner Nick Kelley estimated this is the 12th year his store has participated in the national event.
Each customer can get two free comic books and can donate a non-perishable food item for the Salvation Army for each additional comic they want. There is a maximum limit of one of each free comic per person.
During the 2013 Free Comic Book Day, Kelley said his store collected 786 food items for the Salvation Army. “We hope to top that this year, as we do every year,” he said.
The selection this year includes 50 new comics and 29 returning titles. Fifteen of the new ones are all-ages comics, Kelley said.
“The highlights include two ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ for the upcoming Marvel movie, DC’s ‘Future’s End,’ ‘Spongebob,’ ‘Sonic,’ ‘Hello Kitty,’ ‘Power Rangers,’ ‘Teen Titans Go!,’ ‘The Simpsons’ and ‘Avatar,’” Kelley said.
He expects “Future’s End” to be the most in-demand issue. For kids, the most wanted title may be “Spongebob.”
Chimp’s also will be having all kinds of sales Saturday. Back issues will be 35 percent off; DVDs will be buy two get one free; 25 percent off graphic novels; and in some of the bins, 50-cent comics will be 20 cents each and $1 books will be 50 cents each.
“We encourage people to come dressed in costume,” Kelley stated.
