A 4-year-old Warsaw girl was transported to Lutheran Hospital Friday after she was struck by a passing car. Police responded to the scene around 2:20 p.m. Friday on Winona Avenue just east of Wood Street. According to a Warsaw Police Department press release, the girl, identified as Brenda Lazano, 4, Warsaw, had been inside Carniceria San Jose store and had walked out of the store to the driver’s side of her parents van parked in front of the store. Lazano then ran into the street, going around the back of the van, and was struck by an eastbound vehicle driven by Lori Svinarich, 48, Warsaw. Svinarich told police she didn’t see the child until she was in the street right in front of her and was unable to avoid striking the girl. Police do not suspect alcohol or drugs, but as is standard procedure in serious crashes, took the driver to Kosciusko Community Hospital for a blood draw and are awaiting results. Lazano was transported to Lutheran Hospital following the accident in an unknown condition with head trauma.
