4-H King, Queen Chosen For Fair; Opening Ceremonies Set Tonight

Posted

The Kosciusko County 4-H and Community Fair began in earnest this weekend beginning with dog obedience and showmanship Saturday morning in the show arena.

Saturday evening this year's king, queen, prince and princess were crowned at Lakeview Middle School following the annual fashion revue.

Based on a points-earned system, leadership and community activities, there were seven queen candidates and eight king candidates.

Shanna Krull was named queen and Phillip Camden was named king.

Gretchen Imhoff was named princess and Brent Lamb was named prince.

The "royalty" will assist judges, 4-H leaders and members throughout the week.

Several of the king and queen candidates, as well as last year's queen Gail Rathbun and king Matthew Roberts, described what the consumer clothing and fashion revue participants were wearing.

About 47 4-H'ers modeled everything from formal evening gowns to pajamas during the event.

Tracy George, Extension youth leader, was master of ceremonies.

Photographs of the champions and reserve champions for consumer clothing and junior division fashion revue participants are on page 7A in today's Times-Union.

Sunday activities began with a church service presented by the Walnut Creek Church in the grandstand area.

4-H'ers participated in the cat show, rabbit royalty contest and goat fun show, and the dogs returned for a dog trick, costume and agility show.

Following the parade, the goat royalty contest and the horse and pony costume classes were held.

A huge crowd turned out to watch the parade Sunday. More than 120 units participated, beginning in Winona Lake and ending in the grandstand area of the fairgrounds.

The 100th anniversary of 4-H was celebrated during the "battle of the barns" and "share the fun" event at the grandstands.

This evening the first-year member fun night begins at 5:30 p.m. in the show arena.

Opening ceremonies are set for 6 p.m. The Junior Miss and Mister contest is at 5:30 p.m. in the activity tent followed by the Miss Teenage Kosciusko County Fair contest at 6:30 p.m. The junior (ages 12 and younger) talent contest is at 7:30 p.m.

The Buckeye celebrity donkey races begin at 7 p.m. in the grandstand.

Complete schedules are available in the fair office.

Daily admission is $3 for adults and $1 for kids age 10 to 15 years.
