39 Deer Harvested In City's Reduction Efforts

The numbers are in for the Warsaw Deer Task Force deer-reduction efforts.

There were 39 deer harvested during the reduction efforts that took place Sept. 15 to Dec. 18 by trained archers, according to task force chair Jeff Grose. There were 63 archers who participated in the efforts and hunted in four reduction zones at least once. This was the fourth year for the reduction effort.

There were 41 deer taken by 22 archers last year.

Archers hunted from dawn to dusk in five zones, including: zone A (south of Kosciusko Community Hospital) where 11 deer were taken; zone B (north of KCH) where three deer were taken; zone C (Robinson property, Springhill Addition) where 14 deer were taken; zone D (the Katris Property off Anchorage Road) where nine deer were taken; and zone E (Medtronic area) where two deer were taken.

The archers were required to fill out sheets each time they hunted that included information such as the zone they hunted in, the time the archer entered and left the zone, the number of deer observed, and whether they observed other hunters. They were required to turn in the sheets to Warsaw Police Department after each reduction effort.

Grose said he was pleased with the efforts, but had hoped for at least 40 deer to be taken to keep in line with last year's reduction effort.

He said the task force will meet in June to discuss the possibility of another reduction effort.

If the task force decides to proceed with a recommendation for a reduction effort this year, Warsaw City Council will review the recommendation in July or August for another reduction effort for this year.
