Approximately 250 people were laid off at Zimmer Inc. Tuesday, according to a press release from the company.
The company said the lay-offs are the result of a "restructuring designed to reflect the company's new strategic focus on its core orthopedic implant product lines."
The company's announcement said: "As a result of the new strategic focus" approximately 250 positions will be eliminated, including 130 salaried and administrative/technical positions, about 100 production and maintenance positions, and approximately 20 positions in field-based operations and at the Dover, Ohio, location.
Company spokesman Brad Bishop said the positions being eliminated were not in any specific department but were companywide.
Contrary to rumor, no police officers were requested to be on the premises when the lay-offs were announced, but Warsaw Police Chief Craig Allebach said Zimmer did let the WPD know that the announcement would be made Tuesday.
No more layoffs are planned in Warsaw in the future, said Bishop, and future restructuring actions "may affect non-U.S. geographies."
