RENSSELAER – Two former Warsaw residents were killed Wednesday in a crash on I-65 in Jasper County involving three semis. The crash closed a portion of the interstate for more than eight hours. Dennis Michael Mattern, 59, and Debra Jean Moon, 57, both of Manchester, Tenn., were killed when a flatbed tractor-trailer, driven by Mattern, failed to brake for traffic running at a reduced speed due to road construction. Moon was in the sleeper berth at the time of the crash. Allegedly running at a high rate of speed, according to the Indiana State Police, Mattern rear-ended a tractor-trailer operated by Ryan A. Giddings, 56, of Buckeye, Ariz. The impact of the collision forced Giddings’ vehicle to rear-end another semi driven by Rade Jovanovic, 37, of Brookfield, Ill. Giddings and Jovanovic were not injured. Mattern was born in Warsaw, and Moon was formerly of Warsaw. Their obituaries appear on page 3A.
