Two classes of first-graders from Harrison Elementary School visited Martin’s Super Market today, with two more classes to visit Friday. Each student brought in money to buy items at Martin’s for the Warsaw Community Schools Boomerang Backpacks program, which provides weekend snacks to underprivileged students. According to first-grade teacher Tara Bradley (L), supporting the program is a way for the students to “enrich the lives of others,” while they are also learning their social studies standards. Those standards include community, resources and recycling. She said each student brought in anywhere from $1 to $8 – depending on how generous they wanted to be. After the field trip through Martin’s, the students then went through bins of pre-selected items for Boomerang Backpacks to purchase. The items were then taken back to Harrison for the program.
