Over the next few months, Zimmer will let go of 50 people in their Information Technology Department.
Zimmer officials confirmed to the Times-Union that the responsibilities of those let go will be outsourced to a firm whose location was unavailable as of this morning.
In hopes of offsetting the losses in their IT department, Zimmer plans to add jobs over the next year. Also, Zimmer will provide opportunities for those being let go to apply for other jobs inside the company.
Zimmer's policy is to post job openings in-house before posting them to outside applicants.
The following is a statement released by Zimmer Thursday discussing the layoffs:
"To better respond to changing business needs and an increased focus on customer responsiveness, Zimmer is realigning its information technology resources worldwide.
"Most employees who are affected by this realignment event will be provided with long transition periods with working notice, a severance package, professional outplacement assistance and other benefits. Wherever possible, the company will attempt to place affected employees in other vacancies if they meet position requirements.
"As we realign functions and increase certain capabilities, we expect new hiring will more than offset those position eliminations over the next 12 months."
