Youth Center Expresses Interest In Programs At Webster Elementary

NORTH WEBSTER - The North Webster Elementary School will be abandoned by the school district in 2003, leaving the facility available for occupation by other organizations or demolition.

Town council president Kay Andrews approached the school board during a public meeting Feb. 2 asking for a letter of support so the town could proceed with grant applications to purchase and renovate the facility.

The school board responded with a nod toward the council.

Lakeland Youth Center recently expressed its desire to sponsor programs in the building's gymnasium.

"We feel confident that a link between a North Webster Community Center and a greater Lakeland Youth Center would evolve into a mutually beneficial relationship," said Sherman Goldenberg, president of LYC, in a letter to Andrews.

Various groups and organizations have expressed an interest in the facility and have begun to explore possible funding and uses for the building.

Having town offices, the post office and the North Webster-Tippecanoe Township Library at one location is one possible use along with a community center.

In January the council voted to pursue an Indiana Department of Commerce planning grant to study the school and figure renovation and construction costs.
