A Young Marine Unit is forming in Kosciusko County.
An introductory meeting for interested adults is set for Sept. 6 at 8 a.m. in the American Legion Post 49, 301 N. Buffalo St., Warsaw.
Warsaw lawyer Bill Dalton will discuss the organization with Legion members and members of the public.
Young Marines is for boys and girls ages 8 to 18.
Character building is one of the most important objectives of the Young Marines, a brochure about the national program states. All of its activities emphasize the importance of honesty, courage, respect, loyalty, dependability and a sense of devotion to God, country, community and family.
"We'd like to get a group started here," Dalton said. "And we're looking for a few adults to help out. Former military would be great, but they don't have to be."
Sgt. Maj. Mac Magana is commanding officer of the Central Indiana Young Marines, based in Indianapolis. He said there are three other units in the state, in Columbus, Fort Wayne and Muncie.
"I do look for former Marines, Navy or Army personnel. The majority of my adult leaders are former Marines, retired like myself or Marine Corps Reservists or Marines who served on active duty for a number of years. But the instructors don't have to have military experience. They have to be willing to put in a lot of time."
