Yellow Journalism

Posted
Editor, Times-Union:
Wednesday morning at Warsaw Community High School we had a celebration of champions. The student body came into the Tiger Den and for the first 40 minutes of the day Warsaw Community High School celebrated the many many achievements that our kids have claimed so far this school year. Students with high grades and test scores, band members who have done well in competition, fall athletes who have gained all conference honors and All State honors , and to finish off the day the drama department gave us a preview of the fall musical, which was outstanding. Was the Times-Union there? Nope. The editor was too busy reveling in one of his most recent front page stories with the sole purpose of destroying a man’s career and sell newspapers.

This is not the first time this editor has done this. I am not interested in reliving any of the pain and sorrow the editor of the Times-Union has caused by this type of yellow journalism. However, it is fair to say that numerous people have had their names on the front page because of who they are, not because of the level of the crime committed. Again, nobody is defending a DUI, the point is these people’s names should be found in the public occurrence notices not on the front page. I have said it many times the Times-Union under the direction of this editor is used as a weapon and that is wrong by all journalistic standards.

This past summer I was involved in a video production that highlighted all of the great things that go on in the communities of Warsaw and Winona Lake it aired on WNIT. Our communities and schools have many many great things going on. It is unfortunate that these great communities have got another version of the National Enquirer as the local paper.
