WPD's Adang Honored For Saving Woman's Life In Pit Bull AttackWarsaw Police Dept. Detective Sgt. Steve Adang was recognized during Monday night's city council meeting for saving a Pierceton woman's life.
WPD's review board met Oct. 30, and recommended Adang be recognized with the Medal of Valor for his courageous behavior and act of heroism. The Times-Union previously reported Oct. 21 that Pierceton resident Janet Hartman, 63, stopped at her son Kevin Hartman's residence at 9735 E. CR 150S, Pierceton, for a visit Oct. 20.
When Janet got out of her van and started toward the house, Kevin and his girlfriend Heather Hersha's dog ran from the porch area of the home and attacked Janet. The dog locked onto Janet's arm as she tried to keep it away from her face and neck area.
Adang, Kevin's neighbor, who was off-duty at the time, heard the attack and came to Janet's rescue, and was able to get the dog off Janet.
Adang had left work early that day due to illness, and had to physically beat and pull the pit bull off Janet with his bare fists while putting himself in harm's way to save her life.
While maintaining his composure, Adang had to call 911 for assistance while keeping the dog at bay. He had to apply pressure to arterial bleeding of Janet's mangled arm until EMS arrived at which point she was airlifted to Fort Wayne for immediate surgery.
Hartman has since recovered.
