PIERCETON - Police attempting to serve a warrant on a man at a Merrywood Mobile Home Park residence ended up on the wrong side of an allegedly aggressive suspect. One police officer was knocked unconscious and another suffered a bloody lip while attempting to subdue the man.
Cpl. Eric Coburn of the Warsaw Police Department was treated at Kosciusko Community Hospital for bumps and abrasions after the 12:49 p.m. Sunday incident at the East Wooster Road location.
According to a WPD report, Ptl. Brad Kellar was attempting to serve three outstanding warrants on Alonzo Esteban Villarreal, 21, of 2441 W. CR 250S #121, Warsaw, whom police learned was at the Merrywood residence.
While there, a 17-year-old girl who lives in the residence reportedly was causing problems with police, and she allegedly became violent toward both her mother and officers. At one point, the teen-ager allegedly hit her mother and later reportedly pushed Kellar.
During the incident, while Villarreal was handcuffed, he pulled away from police, lowered his shoulder and shoved Coburn from the kitchen area into the living room and onto a couch, where Coburn apparently struck his head. He was unresponsive for several minutes afterward, according to the police report.
While trying to place Villarreal into a squad car, Kellar was reportedly struck in the face by Villarreal's head, resulting in bleeding from Kellar's lip. Coburn somehow ended up on his back outside the car at that point and he couldn't recall what had happened since the time he was inside the residence. An ambulance was then called to assist Coburn.
Villarreal was preliminarily charged with two counts of battery on a law enforcement officer, resisting law enforcement, intimidation and disorderly conduct. He also was served with the three unrelated warrants. He is being held in the Kosciusko County Jail on $2,000 bond.
The juvenile female was preliminarily charged with battery on a law enforcement officer, battery (against her mother), assisting a criminal, three counts of resisting or interfering with law enforcement and two counts of disorderly conduct. She was placed at a juvenile facility in South Bend.
