Warsaw Board of Public Works and Safety approved Friday for Warsaw Police Department to use a grant to purchase bulletproof vests.

At its June 22 meeting, the board approved for WPD to apply for funds through the Bureau of Justice Assistance for funding to pay for 50 percent of the cost of the bulletproof vests for law enforcement officers.

The bureau approved the request Aug. 31 and has awarded $6,952.07, available through Sept. 30, 2011.

Warsaw would be required to match the amount awarded, and the police department would appropriate those funds in the budget.
