Worms, Worms, Worms

Posted

Shelly Heckert, from the KC Recycling Depot, created 'Worm World' with Heather Fox's first-grade class at Pierceton Elementary School. The class calls the worms their class pets. The students are trying to create compost that they will be able to use in the spring for a garden. It's called vermi-compost because the worms are helping create the new soil. The kids are excited about this project, and they check it three times a week to add food and check moisture. They also have a scale so that they can measure how much food the worms are consuming. The students have a little kitchen compost bin where they store left over fruits and vegetables, coffee grounds and other food items that the worms like. Not much has happened yet, but the children are anxious to see how Worm World begins to change with time.
